At our last Meeting, Mr. Ian Maura, the principal at Program S.U.R.E was our speaker.. Ian shared what Program Sure does with the club. He noted that there were good things going on at the Ministry of Education and that he was promoting those good things. He spoke about some of the problems facing society and how young men and women get lured into the life of gangs and crime. The program at his school works with at risk youth and trains them to break the cycle and get away from that type of life. Some of the reasons that the young men he works with get involved with gangs and violence are because of the community they live in, the examples they see around them and the feeling of power they get. There are different steps and levels that occur before students are sent to Program S.U.R.E. and Mr. Maura explained what occurs before young men end up there. One of the things he does is to show them what they can become and a different type of life they can live. There were two students that accompanied Mr. Maura. He sough to expose them to professionals who they could see as examples and mentors. Mr. Maura gave examples of the success the program is having and the difference it is making in the lives of our youth. The presentation was an important look at what is going on with some men in the society and what is being done to help them.
